Create your first interactive story
Start with one scene and a choice that matters. This guide takes you from a clear prompt to project settings, revisions, and a story you can play and share.
Open VN Studio01
Describe a scene the player can change
Open VN Studio and describe your story in the chat. Include the protagonist, their goal, and one meaningful choice. You can add a script, document, or reference image for context.
Give the scene a goal
Name the protagonist, the setting, and what they want right now. A small cast and one location make a first draft easier to review.
Define a choice and its consequence
For example: tell a friend the truth and risk their trust, or keep the secret and lose a clue. Specify what changes after each option.
Set a few visual constraints
Describe the art style, lighting, and details that should stay consistent, such as a character’s outfit. Add reference images when you have them.
Keep the assets that work
Review existing portraits and backgrounds before generating replacements. Reusing them can help keep the story visually consistent.
02
Choose a manageable first project
Review the settings card before you confirm. Start with a short story and a small number of routes; you can build on it after the first playthrough. Check the image quality setting too, since generation choices affect credit use.
Story format
Choose a visual novel, a phone-style story, or a mix of both. Pick the format that suits how you want the player to experience the scene.
Story scope
Short, medium, and long guide the amount of story to generate. Choose short while you are testing an idea.
Route structure
Use a single route for a focused story, or multiple routes for distinct paths and endings. Check that each branch gives the player a meaningful difference.
Genre focus
Choose up to two genres to guide the tone. Add more specific mood or content preferences in your prompt.
Image framing
Choose landscape (16:9) or portrait (9:16) for the scene composition. Check the result on the screen your readers will use.
Image style
Choose the visual direction for generated images. Check portraits and backgrounds together, then refine any details that do not match.
03
Review the draft with the AI
Read the draft before adding more content. Ask for a specific change, such as “Keep the setting, but make the second choice cost the player a clue.” You can also edit the dialogue and branches in the studio.
Check where each route leads
Follow the branches on the story map. Each option should lead to the intended scene, and every intended ending should be reachable.
Make dialogue and choices clear
Trim repeated exposition and read the dialogue aloud. Choice labels should tell players what they are doing, with consequences that fit the scene.
Check the scene as a whole
Look for missing images, inconsistent characters, and abrupt audio or scene changes. Fix a specific issue, then replay the affected route.
Characters
Review each character’s goal, personality, and role in the conflict. Make those details clear before expanding their scenes.
04
Play every route, then share
A generated draft still needs a playthrough. Check the story from the player’s point of view, including the routes you did not take on the first run.
Test each choice and ending
Use the browser preview to follow every route. Check that the choices, text, images, and audio work together, and replay any route you change.
Publish a story link
Set the title, cover, and description, then publish your story. Open the public link to check what readers will see before you share it.
Export HTML with a paid plan
Paid creation plans include HTML export. Open the exported file and test it before distributing it; externally hosted images, audio, or video may still need an internet connection.
